Welcome to Valerie T. Perez's website, author of The Last Voyage of the Cosmic Muffin.

2008 will be a year of transition. I've taken the plunge and decided to move to Hawaii.  It was on the Big Island that I wrote The Last Voyage of the Cosmic Muffin.    It could be the place where I finish writing The Kayak, a novel I started while living in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

It has been a slow go -- developing plot, motive, characters.  It's been tough, but I have had the strong support of several writers groups over the past year.  I've learned a lot about my profession.

To follow the development of the new book, occassional read a short story and watch my transistion to a new home Click here to read Beyond The Sail, my blog.

In the spring, I'll travel to Europe with my father and uncle to visit places Dad campaigned during World War II.   That could be a story.

Important note: while you may buy a book through this website, I don't take credit cards.  Write a check.  I'll send a book. Keep it simple.

And don't forget,  you can always check in and see what Phoenix and Diablo are up to at SouthBoundCat.blogspot.com.  These kitties will head west with me.  Find out if cats can fly.

Ellen Tanner Marsh, a New York Times Best-Selling Author says Valerie Perez writes like a dream. Her chronicle is not only a fascinating travelogue of an ocean voyage, it’s the journey of a relationship which, like the ship itself, endures calm waters and choppy seas. It’s also the story of a woman who begins to grow more intimate with God and discovers a spirituality she never knew she had. Frank and funny, this is a marvelous memoir for anyone wondering when their own ship might come in—or when it might sail off toward the horizon in pursuit of something unexpected and perhaps even better.

Valerie Perez was primed for adventure. After completing her time as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Micronesia, she met Shepard Harris, captain of the seagoing sailboat, Cosmic Muffin. The landlubber and the sailor gave in to their passions and struck out together on an extended voyage to Hawaii and, ultimately, to Shep’s home in California. In this delightful and compelling memoir, Valerie tells the story of falling in love with a man who eschews commitment, and spending months at sea enduring a relationship that runs as hot and cold as the Pacific currents.

What stirs the reader’s heart in this very forthright memoir is the author’s growth, specifically her ability to come to terms with the truth about this relationship…and her relationship to God. That she can reveal the latter while neither proselytizing nor conveying the sense that she has discovered what few can only adds to the enjoyment and honesty of this book.

Valerie Perez is a very funny woman. Her humor is sharp, sometimes edgy, but there is always an aura of self-effacement, of her knowing who she is, what her heart requires, and how to survive the disappointment when love is not returned.

Ultimately, Perez comes to understand that what really matters in life is self-respect, the ability to confront adversity, appreciating love and friendship in all their permutations, and an honest relationship with God.

Born and raised near Saratoga Springs, New York, Valerie Perez earned her MBA from the University of Michigan and is a managing partner with Design Management Alliance. Shortly before her fiftieth birthday, she joined the Peace Corps and was sent to the Federated States of Micronesia. The author has traveled and hiked through South America, Nepal and Thailand and now lives in Bean Station, Tennessee.
